Below are the proposed categories for The 2008 Weblog Awards.  While we're working on the site design and getting the nomination process underway (more news about that next week) this is your chance to suggest new categories or suggest existing categories that should be removed.

Technorati Authority (what's this?)

Best Major Blog (Authority over 2001)
Best Large Blog (Authority between 1001 and 2000)
Best Mid Major Blog (Authority between 501 and 1000)
Best Mid Minor Blog (Authority between 301 and 500)
Best Small Major Blog (Authority between 201 and 300)
Best Small Minor Blog (Authority between 101 and 200)
Best Up And Coming Blog (Authority between 51 and 100)
Best Hidden Gem (Authority between 0 and 50)

At this point the TTLB or Technorati Authority will be an either or choice.  I'm interested in hearing opinions.  Technorati Authority is a measure of the blogs linking to a particular blog in the last six months.  Look at the authority of the sites that link to your site in Technorati to see if the bands proposed make sense.  Both are approximations, for our purposes, for categorizing sites based on size of readership.  If's inexact, but it's the best tool we have.

While we spin up things for the start of nominations you'll have a chance to lobby for new (or old) categories or to suggest deletions.

Nominations will open November 3, 2008.

Hi Kevin,

Two questions:

[1] How does one get registered as a member of the TTLB ecosystem?

[2] May I recommend some narrowed focus categories under the category "military," such as "currently enlisted" vs. "retired"? Also, perhaps the category could be broken down into specialties therein, such as "counter-terrorism," "war on terror," "technologies," "classical battles, etc.

Of course, I am thinking about our blog, rangeragainstwar, and what niche into which we might fit. I know several of our fellow bloggers would appreciate this breakdown, giving everyone who writes on different aspects of the military a chance to compete.

Thanks for your consideration and all your good work,

A couple catagory suggestions...

Best Entertainment Blog (not celeb, entertainment in general)

Best Localized Blog (a blog about a specific area, whatever subject, as long as it's localized)

When will nominations be open? I would like to nominate my favorite food site again this year.

I would like to make a suggestion.

My blog was nominated for Best Literature Blog last year, and I do write about on literature - it's future, its importance, and so on.

However, my blog also contains a lot of posts about finance, politics, urban life, and the like - generally, it's about culture, broadly defined. Not high culture, but the world we live in.

I would like to propose a category, possibly under Arts and Letters, for "Best Essayist" blog, or possibly "Best Diverse Blog" for people like me.

Another one I thought of...

Best Interview Blog (blogs that focus on talking to people, almost like a journalistic blog, without it being on journalism)

Li'l Beaver proudly nominates the DUmmie FUnnies again for BEST Humor Blog primarily to demoralize the Left. Last year the nomination of the DUmmie FUnnies threw the entire leftwing blogosphere into a tizzy to the extent that their obsession took up scores of pages of rantings which, ironically, were inadvertently quite humorous.

From Merriam-Webster:

One entry found.

Pronunciation: \ˈblō-vē-ˌāt\
Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): blo·vi·at·ed; blo·vi·at·ing
Etymology: perhaps irregular from blow
Date: circa 1879

: to speak or write verbosely and windily

Thanks for the sugguestions. All will be considered.

How about a "Best History Blog" under the Arts & Letters categories? Lot of good ones out there that cut across the current list of categories.

How about a 'Best Home and Garden Blog'
NZ Home and Garden Blog

I would really like to revisit best design like we did in 2005.

I think Best Weight Loss Blog and Best Fitness Blog should be broken out of the Best Medical/Health Issues Blog category.
